My project 'Private but Non-Private (공유되지 않는 공동공간)' was initiated out of my concern for the residential spaces that are constructed in repetitive, identical designs that are often found throughout Korea’s rapidly expanded urban environment as a result of the country’s economic development. I have deeply contemplated how to reflect individuality and disclose autonomy in a public space where individual freedom is restricted, trying to construct an intermediate zone for this. After all, I have created an intermediate arena where individual privacy is ensured and respected in a process of deconstructing and reconstructing communal residential spaces where individual autonomy is restricted. This is a project to showcase an individual’s existential, psychological, and emotional perception of environmental change in a society where individual autonomy is restricted in a process of macroscopic transfiguration.
